Teacher-Librarian Role

The Teacher-Librarian works in collaboration with teachers and students to provide opportunities and resources for effective teaching and learning opportunities to support improvement in student achievement. The teacher-librarian is a highly skilled teacher with interactive competencies in teacher education, classroom experience and course of study in teacher-librarianship and information studies.

Students must learn to manage ideas and information. Together with classroom teachers, the Teacher-Librarian engages in teaching that enables students to solve information-related problems by using the Inquiry Process.


The Teacher-Librarian's role in:

Working directly with staff

  • developing a school-based continuum of information skills and strategies;
  • participating in instructional design, development, delivery and evaluation of study units upon request of teacher;
  • providing assistance to teachers in seeking out and promoting a variety of materials and approaches;
  • particpating in the development and implementation of technology plans for school and classrooms;
  • supporting colleagues in the integration of technology into learning; and
  • supporting and advising teachers in the development of instructional units and strategies.

Working with students

  • developing media/technological literacy skills;
  • developing research skills; and
  • improving literacy skills.

The Teacher-Librarian's role in:

Researching/Resourcing

  • Evaluating, selecting and organizing learning materials and equipment.
  • Identifying appropriate outside sources of information.
  • Ensuring maintenance of an up-to-date catalogue of resources.

The Teacher-Librarian's role in:

Library Management

  • Administering budgets applicable to library.
  • Creating and supporting a positive learning environment.
  • Promoting information technology as learning.
  • Managing inventory (cataloguing circulation).
  • Managing library statistics and records as necessary.
