J.R. Reid

Mr. Reid, in whose honour our school is named, was born on January 26, 1882 in Teeswater, Ontario.
He gained his elementary education in a small rural school, his high-school education at Parkhill, and his teacher-training at Strathroy Model School and London Normal School. After furthering his education at Queen’s University, he came to Western Canada in 1909, and to Manitoba in 1919.
In Manitoba, Mr. Reid was first employed by the Department of Agriculture, then by Swan River School Board, and in 1924 as English teacher in the Brandon Collegiate Institute. In 1927 he accepted the principalship of that Institution, a position which he held until his resignation in 1949, to take work with the Brandon Sun, until his final retirement in 1956. As a teacher Mr. Reid served his profession well and in various capacities: as president of the Western
Manitoba Teacher’s Association, as member for a four – year period of the Advisory Board of Education, as delegate to the Canadian Teachers’ Convention of 1931 at Moncton, New Brunswick, as Instructor to teachers taking night classes, and in 1941 as Inspector of Collegiate and College Departments of Western Manitoba. In 1937 Mr. Reid was awarded the coronation medal in recognition of his work in education.
Since 1925 Mr. Reid has served as a member of the Session of St. Paul’s Church. For almost a half a century he has held membership in the Canadian order of Foresters, and in the Masonic Order, both of which he faithfully served in several capacities.
During World War I, Mr. Reid earned the rank of Lieutenant, and for a number of years during World War II, he served as Commanding Officer of the eighty – second Squadron of Air Cadets with the rank of Flight – Lieutenant.
This “Grand old man” whose service in the interests of education commenced during the reign of Queen Victoria, has endeared himself to thousands of students and associates, and most recently to the three hundred elementary students whom he has frequently visited during this year of 1959 – 1960 at J. R. Reid School.

A Message from the Principal
It is a pleasure to have the privilege of writing a few paragraphs in the first Year Book of the J.R. Reid School.
It has been a real joy in observing the interest, the effort, and the successes of the majority of the students, and gladness has come to me as I have observed the unselfishness and the willingness with which each of you has carried out your extra activities to make our school a success. I hope that from there activities you have learned the secrets of daily living.
To those that are graduating to another grade or school may I express sincere wishes for continued success. I am proud of you and I am counting on you to continue your work to the best of your ability in the years to come. From time to time some of you may have feelings of discouragement, but if you remember to face your obstacles, success will eventually be your.
In conclusion may I hope that your first year at J.R. Reid has been a happy one, and I wish each of you all the success and happiness in the years to come.

President’s Message
I would like to congratulate the Student Council and Mrs. Lindsay on their very successful achievement in producing the first J. R. Reid Book. As we look over the book we can see the wonderful result of their time and energy. As the school year draws to a close we anxiously await summer holidays. I am sure that we are all secretly looking forward to the start of the new school year. The graduates of our school can recall many fond memories of the years spent at our lovely school.
During the past year I am sure everyone has enjoyed our activities. The basketball, hockey, netball, and school parties have given the utmost enjoyment.
I would like to thank all the Student Council members who have been very co-operative in every one of our ventures. To the Student Council of 1960-61 and to the students of J. R. Reid I wish the best of luck.

Valedictory
Mr. Chairman, members of the staff, ladies and gentlemen, and fellow students:
It is my privilege and indeed a very great honour to have been chosen to express for my fellow students and for myself what this past year at J. R. Reid has meant to us. There is always a thrill when one goes to another school – but in this case we were all going to a new school, which made it more exciting than ever.
During this short year we were able to organize a hockey team, a basketball team, and also to form a Student Council in order that there be social entertainment. This and many other things in one short year at J.R. Reid – a year in which we had experiences which cannot be repeated but will always be remembered.
We wish to thank our teachers who have contributed to the development of our education. They have indeed earned a reward – a reward that will be continued throughout the years for ``something accomplished, something done.``
To our parents too, a sincere ``thank you`` for granting us the privilege of education, plus a reminder that our homework is not yet completed. A thank you again to all those who made ``J.R. Reid`s`` first year a happy one for all of us.
-Barbara Cole
