The Teacher-Librarian is an information and literary
specialist who:
|
|
"initiates and participates in teaching which
leads to the development of information literacy"

Students must learn to manage ideas and information. Together with
classroom teachers, the Teacher-Librarian engages in teaching that enables
students to solve information-related problems by using the Inquiry
Process.
|
|
The Teacher-Librarian: |
- advocates the integration of information literacy into classroom
programs;
- collaborates with staff to plan, teach, and evaluate units of study in
which information literacy is integrated with outcomes stated in the
curricula;
- keeps informed about new resources (including the Internet) and chooses
appropriate materials based on staff and student needs and budget;
- informs staff and students about new and appropriate available
resources;
- understands that people learn in different ways and at different rates and
applies this knowledge to collaborative planning;
- develops and conducts information sessions on a variety of topics;
- participates on Professional Development Committees within the
school/division;
- commits personally and professionally to life-long learning

- leads in the implementation of change.

Students need to grow in their ability to respond personally and critically
to oral, literary, and media texts. Together with classroom teachers, the
Teacher-Librarian engages in teaching that provides opportunities for learners
to interact with a variety of quality texts and genres.

The Teacher-Librarian: |
- recommends literature and information resources in order to promote the
use of a wide variety of materials;
- promotes and models a commitment of reading;
- cultivates an appreciation of literature;
- encourages and respects a wide range of thoughtful
responses;
- fosters knowledge and acceptance of one's own and other cultures.

An effective school library requires a well-organized and carefully selected
collection of resources and appropriate facilities and equipment. The
Teacher-Librarian devises and implements services that maintain the collection,
facilities and equipment, and that make these resources readily available to the
school community.

|
The Teacher-Librarian: |
- makes informed choices regarding the selection of all
materials;
- oversees ordering, receiving, cataloguing and processing
of all incoming
resources;
- makes policy and protocol decisions regarding best
cataloguing practices for her or his school and its population;
- manages the library budget;
- manages the circulation of all materials;
- "weeds" the collection on a regular basis using the Division's
policy guideline;
- completes a regular inventory of all materials;
- creates and maintains a positive learning environment
within the library;
- recruits and trains volunteers;
- maintains a flexible schedule for use of library spaces;
- manages inter-library loans;
- maintains the collection in a standard, organized
manner;
- advocates for funding.
