Parent Meeting Minutes October 11 2006 Present: Joyce Agar, Carol McInnis Rocan, Laurie Shewchuk, Karen Wall, MaryAnne Rocan, Wayne Skipo, Terry Osiowy, Michael Adamski, Maureen Stitt, Rob Bellmont, Leslie Loader Regrets: Lauren Isaac, Aynsley Helwer, Cathy Jensen, Barb Webber, Edie Smith, Marilyn Eamer, Darla Jory, Patricia Toth. 7PM – round table introductions and Sept 19 minutes were reviewed with note of total parents requesting emails/info from PAC now up to 44 following open house of Sept. Principal’s
report Enrollment actually rounded out being 927 down from 955 last year which could well mean a cut in 2 full time teachers for next year and a possible reduction in programs. Crocus had the same enrollment as last year but numbers coming into grad 9 are less than graduation class numbers so show a general trend at decreasing enrollment overall. Coupled with this challenge is the fact that student needs are increasing with more struggling, especially in the lower grades. Attendance callbacks are time consuming and admin is currently focusing on Grade 9+10’s. School is currently looking at a computer program that dials and sends a recording re missed classes and even has a capability of having a password number for parents to enter so students can’t erase the message! Cost is estimated at $4200 but would free up staff time. This automatic dialer cold also be used for messages about parent meeting and such and has been used by Crocus for years and is well rated by their vice principal. If system if approved could be setup in one months time. Advanced placement course credit meeting with BU’s science department went well and focused on communication and explaining how the AP system works. It was attended by 4 from VM and 9 from BU. VM admin left with a good feeling about possible outcome and acceptance of AP courses as a BU credit. It was also mentioned that acceptance is reviewed every 5 years routinely at BU. Hopefully the decision will be made before VM’s Allison Clement has Pre Career day in Nov. The topic will also be brought up at the AP Provincial wide conference as these courses are accepted in Wpg universities and other provinces and actually leads to a ‘brain drain’ fro Brandon and works against recruitment for BU. October’s progress report did not get sent out as usual as there was a glitch in the computer programming. Div Admin was doing systems backups and entries made by teacher at the time were lost. Reports are expected to go out in the next week or 2 Suspensions so far have numbered at 5 compared to 25 last year. Presentation
by M Adamski School sports fees were presented (as listed below) including an explanation of costs which rise significantly when out of town tournaments are attended. The Varsity Girls Saskatoon tourney cast $2400 for 12 players. Season length was also a factor as hockey’s season lasts from Sept till March with lots of practices and games in that time (one parent mentioned that the high cost is still lower than Bdn Youth Hockey)Football does do some fundraising by selling coupons with registration credits for those who sell their entire package. Varsity boys do a canteen at Viking Tournament but generally fundraising activities are not popular for parents or coaches due to time and efforts necessary. Parents of Varsity Girls team did meet with admin re high costs and are thinking about an Athletic association similar to Music association fundraisers. Admin is to meet with coaches to discuss fees. The topic of those who do not pay came up and it was noted that even though there is provisions for those who cannot pay some won’t come forward about their limitations and a system needs to be in place so players know about the help available. It is to be noted that Admin expected the rates to be similar within Brandon but significantly higher tan Winnipeg due to transportation costs and substitution costs to replace coaches away. Business Nutrition policy draft was reviewed with note of the Top of the Class nutritious suggestions to be followed. The policy so far encourages nutritious food in canteens vending machines, cafeterias, staff rooms, fundraisers and functions. It calls for principals to work with students, staff and parents annually to ensure the proper choices are made. It also requires that students have space provided to eat lunch. This affects current practices in the school and right now there is only a very small lunch room available. Feedback is welcomed regarding this draft and the parental group present discussed that students just go to 7-11 to get their junk food and that presents other issues such as out of school behavior and littering some allow drinks in class (Big Gulps) By high school students decide what they really want to eat as long as we can provide healthy options too. Terry noted that sales of milk and water have increased of late. Committee
reports Student council- minutes reflected participation at a student leadership conference in Sept which was positive but cost $1000. Fall BBQ made $170 with some leftover foods which will be sold at the dance of Oct 26 -$5 each at the Victoria Inn. Assembly pre spirit week was Oct 5 and included council in dance with costumes. Student Council has been invited to send reps bi weekly to City council as a youth representative by Stephen Montague. Mr. Adamski reports organizing a student report for print in the Brandon Sun weekly and four students will write for that. One teacher and he will edit. Brandon Group Council -meeting same night responses of some trustees to parental questions has been forwarded. Division Parent Liaison -still discussing fees and statistical summary. An Executive report of the analysis will be made public so people can understand the need for changes. The budget forum will be held later in the year –after budget announcements are made provincially so the meetings don’t come off as wish lists! Forums are planned to invite input fro parents and students as well as info nights -Nov23 at Crocus Bullying by Bill Bully and Nonie Klassen re cyber-bullying -date TBA for April. Elementary school lists are being monitored as some are outstanding and equality, affordability yet creativity need to be considered. Correspondence Historical calendar from current school Board supplied to all students Discussion Teacher noon hour free respected but many doing volunteering and offering to meet then. Locker searches Q-how do you decide A-must have suspicions of problems from a source/tipper. Random searches (with dog) are more planned regarding specific problems. Assembly is planned with Grade 9’s as new student to review rules and expectations. Lockdown drill of Sept went very well and Admin report such a silence and stillness that it was eerie. Some issues need to be reviewed such as ‘dead-zones’ which cannot hear the intercom and possibility of lockdown needing to occur when students are not in class such as lunch and between periods. O Canada has returned to AM practice. Next
