(which included 5 cultural tables, as well as recently erected multilanguage
signs and multi country flags with more events and flags to come). The student
council did purchase a new speaker system for the gym.BSD has sent out a draft
Nutition policy for school review and Brent McEachen will set up a committee
that an give feedback-it will affect the canteen greatly and possibly the funds
it raises.
Principal Report
Terry felt this has been the
best September yet as far as start up with no suspensions to date compared to
6-10 usually occuring in September. The contirbuting positive factors included
the home school liaison position, with direct hallway contact and monitoring of
students as well as BPS constible presence and the new enforced dress code.
Enrollment is down to 933
students (was 955 last year) and this could project a loss of 2 staff for next
year as the Sept 30 enrollment number is used to calculate total number of staff
for the next year. This would affect programs and class size.
New staff include Vice Principal Mr. Michael Adamski, as well as a new
secretary and home school liaison person.
Recent changes such as duty free noon hour brought in with recent
contract arbitration grealy affects meeting time availablitiy and the admin
continue to hope that parental interest and presense at our meetings justifies
the adminitration staff time in the evenings. They are also having challenges
meeting wth staff as often meetings would occur at noon hour. This has also
necesitated a change in noon hour supervision as now a partime teacher must be
schedulled to be free for another class time for lunch so they can be present
during student lunch time.Extracurricular activity coaching and teacher
involvemet is still volunteer time spent by the teachers.
VM will be setting up a safe and respectful school committee (re
division's goals) to include 6-8 students, 2parents, 2 staff, BSD constible and
administration.Rob Bellmont offered to join as rep so one more parent is needed
for 4 meetings per year.
Athletic fees will be noticeably increased this year as canteen support
from previous years is reduced has been redirected to leave sports as self
sufficient. This suggestion came also from student voice luncheon that wanted
funds to go to all students equally.Costs such as supplies and trips will be
user pay with a catch system still in place for those that cannot afford to
join. This is available through the coaches and admin. Vincent Massey sports
fees are high but that is a reflection of the non fundraising policy here.Out of
town tournament costs are high and substitute costs are $110 as well as
transportation and registration costs. This of course has had an impact on the coaches and we
still need a female and male volleyball coach for this season. But the message
delivered to the sfaff was Job #1 is still classroom learning.Terry will bring
to our next meeting exact costs per athlete and sport within our building and we
can further discuss this topic Oct 11.Terry reports that music programs still
continue to get some financial supports from the division.
Terry will meet with science department of BU regarding accepting as a
credit, the AP programs from Vincent Massey. This year they are not accepted as a
University credit even though they are accepted in Winnipeg universities as well
as cross country. He will explain to the professors that the courses are audited
,exams are marked out of house, and the standards are cross country .The deans
are in support of accepting the credits but this is an in department issue. It
has a financial and course load reprocussions to our students attending
university as these are credits they can have under their belt befor starting
first year university.Currently VM offers AP courses in Calculus,
Chemistry,Biology, Physics, and are starting a new english program at the grade
11 stage this year.
Open house is Wednesday Sept 20 and will start with an assembly for all
then a short run through of the students timetable for a chance for all to meet
and talk to each teacher. Students and parents are welcome.
VM has a new computer program that accepts email addresses for all
parents/guardians but this has not been set up yet. It will allow mass emailling
of information to all listed and will hopefully improve school-home
communication. At this point we are reminded though to check the VM website as
it is update weekly with events. http://www.brandonsd.mb.ca/massey/
