Vincent Massey Parent Advisory Council Meeting
Terry reported the results of a safety audit completed by the Brandon Police Service.
Recommendations from the Report were:
i) Entranceways - should be open until 8:55 a.m. then all but the main door should be locked.
ii) Video security was suggested for entrances, doors, and outside the building.
iii) A code system should be developed for emergency situations with a color theme i.e. Code Red for emergency.
iv) Provide professional development for staff including recognizing the signs of escalating student behaviors.
Parents received an update on the suspensions, year to date within the school
Arrangements were confirmed for hosting a parent drug information night in January 2003. Details will follow.
Nick Chackowsky has revamped the website and continues to monitor and update it.
There was discussion about the development of a Vincent Massey Strategic Plan and the need to have all stakeholders participate in creating the plan. The plan will address i) best practices - what’s happening in the classroom and the school and ways to motivate the unmotivated and aboriginal students. ii) safe schools iii) infusion of technology. Those interested in volunteering were asked to let Sandy Trudel know.
There was discussion regarding:
· Classroom sizes
· The introduction of random locker searches in the 2002 – 2003 school year.
· The availabilities of activities for students during the lunch hour.
· Head gear in the school and whether to continue to allow it to be worn
· Supervision for school dances and policies in effect
