What
Can Families Do to Build Links Between Families and Schools
- Participate
in school planning
- Reinforce
good study habits
- Communicate
with the school with notes, phone calls and visits
- Volunteer
at a school (as a teacher aide, committee member, library assistant, etc.)
- Help
children to learn to manage time and develop time lines
What
Can Schools Do to Build Links Between Schools and Families
- Involve
parents in school decisions and school planning (parent organizations,
advisory councils or committees)
- Call
each parent at the beginning of the year to introduce yourself
- Meet
with every parent at least once per year, with follow-ups as needed
- Make
language translators available to assist families as needed
- Send
folders of student work home for parent review and comment on a regular
basis
- Develop
a regular schedule of useful notices, memos, phone calls, newsletters and
other communication
- Provide
clear information on all school policies, programs, changes and transitions
- Recruit
and organize help and support such as school and classroom volunteer
programs, parent patrols
- Provide
information and ideas to families about how to help students at home with
homework.
