Parents Roles and Responsibilities
Parents, as their child’s first teachers, establish the
foundation for lifelong learning. A
child’s academic performance, behaviour, and motivation may show significant
gains when parents and community members are involved in school programs
directly. For example parents can
- Provide
a positive learning environment at home to support the ongoing progress and
achievement of their child in school
- Encourage
the child to put forth the consistent effort required to be successful
- Attend
parent-teacher conferences and maintain close contact with the school to
consult with the teacher(s) about the attendance, behaviour, progress and
achievement of their child in school
- Provide
the classroom teacher(s) with relevant information about their child that
will enhance the teaching and learning processes
- Receive
information regularly about the attendance, behaviour, progress, and
achievement of their child in school
- Learn
about education matters, including information about outcomes, provincial
standards, teaching-learning experiences, assessment, evaluation, and
reporting policies and practices
- Obtain
copies of information contained in cumulative records and files on their
child (available from the school division) if they have questions regarding
the assessment or evaluation of their child’s progress and/or achievement
(prior to the child reaching the age of majority)
- Participate
in decision making at the local school level through various means, such as
membership in the Advisory Council for School Leadership.
