Taken from Advisory Councils for School Leadership – A
Handbook for Parents, Teachers, and Administrators.
Advisory
Council’s Role
Advisory Councils advise principals about school policies,
activities and organization by participating in some or all of the following
activities:
- Developing
an annual school plan
- Recommending
what types of optional curricula are to be offered (exploring available
options)
- Recommending
what extra curricular activities the school should offer
- Developing
school codes of conduct and behaviour
- Recommending
community use of school facilities
- Determining
use of discretionary funds within the school budget
- Promoting
community interest in the schools
- Promoting
parental involvement in the school system
Concerns related to individual students and school staff do
not fall within the mandate of the advisory council. They should be dealt with using the existing protocols
already established by schools/school divisions.
Members
of the advisory council will
- Ensure
that there is commitment to the interests of students
- Ensure
that the views of parents are being represented
- Be
well informed about the subjects to be discussed
- Contribute
to discussions and listen to other members
- Consider
each issue objectively
- Set
realistic goals
