| About Student Support Services |
|
Student Support Services exists as an interdisciplinary
system to
assist students, families and school personnel in meeting the needs of
students. Student Support Services are available to students at each
grade level. A team is assigned to each school within the Division.
The Student Support Services Department is
interdisciplinary and includes:
- Psychologists
- Social Workers
- Speech/Language Pathologists
- Aboriginal Education Counsellor
- Medical Follow-up Program Worker
- Program Facilitators
- Elementary Student Support Teacher
- Attendance Counsellor
Student Support Services personnel maintain offices at
the Brandon School Division Administration Office and conduct the majority
of their work in the schools. |

Student
Support Services Team
Psychologist:
The psychologist provides assessment and treatment for educational,
emotional and behavioral difficulties. Follow-up services may involve
collaborating with students, parents, teachers, school personnel
and community professionals.
Social
Worker: The social worker provides assessment and treatment
services to individuals, families and groups. The social worker
coordinates the efforts of school, home and community.
Speech-Language
Pathologist: The speech-language pathologist assesses
the needs of students in the areas of articulation, phonology, language,
stuttering and voice. Speech-language therapy programs are designed
to meet individual needs of students through direct treatment and/or
consultation with school and home.
Program
Facilitators: The
role
of
the
Program
Facilitator
is
to
provide
assistance
and
support
for
programming
for
students
with
special
learning
needs.
The
Program
Facilitator
works
in
collaboration
with
families,
school
teams,
other
Divisional
personnel
and
community
agencies
in
order
to
coordinate
services
for
students.
Aboriginal
Education
Counsellor: The Aboriginal
Education
Counsellor's
primary role is to provide support and assistance to Aboriginal
students, families and groups. Support may involve school-family
mediation, education of school personnel in cultural issues and
liaison with community agencies.
Elementary
Student
Support
Program
Teacher: The
Elementary
Student
Support
Program
Teacher
coordinates
the
Elementary
Student
Support
Program (ESSP).
The
ESSP
is
a
Divisional
program
designed
to
assist
students
from
Kindergarten
to
Grade
6
who
are
having
significant social/emotional/behavioural
difficulties
coping
in
the
classroom.
Students
are
referred
to
a
Divisional
committee
that
prioritizes
students
for
service.
The
ESSP
teacher
works
with
the
student
in
his/her
classroom
and
assists
the
school
team
with
programming.
Medication
Follow-up Program Worker: The Medication Follow-up Program
is a partnership with Brandon Regional Health Authority. The Medication
Follow-up Worker collaborates with parents, school personnel,

Services
personnel, physicians and community agencies to monitor
the effectiveness of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
medication.
Attendance
Counsellor: The
Attendance
Counsellor works with students,
parents, school personnel, the justice system and community agencies
to deal with attendance issues.
